Our Montessori environments are designed to be non – homogeneous in nature and encourage bringing together children from a diversity of age groups because a Montessori environment is, in essence, a microcosm of the real world- where stark uniformity is not a reality. Having children from diverse age groups facilitates their development. Since children are naturally curious, the Montessori adult kindles their desire to know, leading them to learn through interactions and exchanges. The environment motivates the children to learn from each other’s strengths and abilities, the younger ones often learning by emulation of the older ones, while for the older ones acquire leadership and mentoring skills. Overall, the virtue of a mixed age group environment is that it promotes adaptability to a diverse surrounding among all children, preparing them for the real world.
